Narali Bhat — Sweet Coconut Rice (Quick Recipe Card)

Narali Bhat is a traditional Konkani sweet made with rice, fresh grated coconut, jaggery, and ghee. Perfect for festivals and family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked fragrant rice (basmati or local)
  • 3/4 cup freshly grated coconut
  • 1/2 cup jaggery (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 4-5 cardamom pods, crushed (or 1/4 tsp cardamom powder)
  • 2 tbsp chopped cashews and raisins (optional)
  • a pinch of saffron (optional)

Method (Quick)

  1. Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a pan. Lightly roast cashews and raisins until golden; set aside.
  2. In the same pan, add grated coconut and roast gently on low heat for 2–3 minutes without browning.
  3. Add jaggery with 2–3 tablespoons of warm water; stir until jaggery dissolves and forms a syrup.
  4. Mix in the cooked rice and combine evenly with the coconut-jaggery syrup. Cook for 2–3 minutes so flavors meld.
  5. Add remaining ghee, cardamom, saffron (if using), and roasted nuts. Stir gently and remove from heat.
  6. Serve warm or at room temperature as a festive sweet or offering.

Notes & Tips

  • Use jaggery for authentic flavor and added nutrients; substitute with sugar if needed.
  • Adjust sweetness to taste—start with less jaggery and add more if required.
  • For a richer taste, replace 1/4 cup of cooked rice with a little khoya (mawa) or add extra ghee.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; reheat gently before serving.

Health Touch

Made with coconut and jaggery, Narali Bhat provides healthy fats, fiber, and iron. Enjoy in moderation as a nourishing festive treat.
